Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” ~John 8:12
For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ. ~2 Corinthians 4:6
Try to be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud. I saw this quote on a digital sign a few weeks ago and have been pondering it since. I really like the idea the message conveys and wanted to give some thought as to how I could make that idea a reality.
There are many people who live in a world of darkness and rainclouds—people who need hope, peace, and joy in their lives. For some it’s a short-term darkness, while for others it seems to last a very long time. What can I do to lift someone out of darkness. How can I be a rainbow in the midst of another person’s cloud?
I started by considering what rainbows are and how they are formed. Rainbows are the result of refracted white light. They form when light from the sun passes through drops of water that act as prisms, splitting the light into dazzling bows of color. When a rainbow appears in a dark and gloomy rain cloud, it acts as a reminder that the sun is there too. It reminds us that when light enters the darkness, the world is beautiful and filled with color.
So, how can I become a rainbow in someone else’s cloud? Maybe my job is not to be the rainbow; maybe my job is to bring them the light that causes the rainbow. If that is true, I need a source of light to shine into their darkness. In fact, I need the greatest source of light we have—the Son, Jesus Christ. Just like a rainbow can’t appear in a sky full of dark clouds without the presence of the sun, a rainbow can’t appear for someone living in darkness without the presence of the Son.
Scripture tells us that Jesus is the light of the world—a light that can lead us out of darkness into life. Scripture also tells us that God has made His light shine in our hearts so that we can know His glory as seen in the face of His Son, Jesus. If I allow the light of the world to enter my heart and lead me into abundant life, I can then reflect that light into someone else’s life, causing a rainbow to appear in the middle of his/her cloud. I can be a reminder that he/she is indeed in the presence of the Son. I can show others that when His light enters their hearts, the darkness fades away, and the world becomes more beautiful and filled with color.
Let’s shine some Sonlight into the lives of the people we encounter everyday and watch as rainbows appear all around us.
